Next steps

As you know, the newest assessment of our industry’s diversity efforts came out in time for Diversity Week (the Multi-Ethnic Employment in Telecommunications survey commissioned by NAMIC). The story was that we are doing okay, but haven’t improved since we last measured.

This type of information can be seen as a challenge or an opportunity. The good news about a survey like this is that it can serve as a wake-up call to rouse a company’s diversity efforts. In any organization, you need a sense of urgency to make change and that is what is required.

For maximum effectiveness, we need to institutionalize diversity and create programs that can scale and take the industry to the next level.

Welcome to coverage of Diversity Week! I’m David Porter, the new Executive Director of the Walter Kaitz Foundation. You can read the press release announcing my hire and learn more about my background. I’m excited about this coming week up in NYC; if you aren’t able to be there, you can follow the events right here on this blog.

One of the highlights of the week will be our latest Supplier Diversity Workshop. If you’re not aware, Kaitz has been doing these workshops for seven years, gradually expanding them to take place during The Cable Show, SCTE’s Cable-Tec Expo and Diversity Week. The event provides an opportunity to foster connection between the cable industry and the minority and women-owned business community.
